Villa Cetinale is in a category of its own among Tuscan wedding venues. Described by Architectural Digest as the most beautiful villa in Tuscany, this seventeenth century estate near Siena combines extraordinary architecture, historic gardens and a level of privacy and exclusivity that is genuinely rare. I photographed a wedding here and it remains one of the most remarkable days I have spent working in Tuscany. The combination of the villa, the gardens, the surrounding landscape and the complete silence of the estate creates an atmosphere that is unlike anything else in the region.
Villa Cetinale: The Venue
Villa Cetinale sits in the Montagnola Senese between Siena and the Maremma, surrounded by centuries old gardens, woodland and open Tuscan countryside. The estate is available for exclusive private hire, which means that on a wedding day here you have the entire property to yourselves. There are no other guests, no shared spaces and no sense of being in a venue. You are simply in one of the most beautiful private estates in Italy.
The villa was designed in the seventeenth century and the gardens have been developed over centuries to include formal Italian garden design, the Thebaid holy woodland and the Romitorio that sits above the estate on the hill behind. The combination of these elements creates a setting with extraordinary visual variety and depth.
The Gardens and the Thebaid
The gardens at Villa Cetinale are among the most extraordinary in Tuscany. The formal Italian garden in front of the villa, with its geometric hedges, stone statues and axial design, creates a setting that feels genuinely historic and deeply refined. For wedding photography, this space works beautifully at any time of day, with the quality of light changing the atmosphere completely between morning and golden hour.
Behind the villa, the Thebaid, or Holy Wood, rises up the hill toward the Romitorio. This ancient woodland, with its paths, chapels and hermit cells carved into the rock, has a completely different atmosphere: wild, atmospheric and unlike anything else available at a wedding venue in Tuscany.
