Wedding at Villa Cora Florence

Villa Cora is one of the most elegant wedding venues in Florence. A nineteenth century neoclassical villa set in the hills above the city, with manicured gardens, extraordinary interiors and a level of refinement that places it in a category of its own. I photographed a wedding here that remains one of my most memorable days in Florence, combining a ceremony at La Certosa with a reception at the villa that made full use of everything this extraordinary place has to offer.

Villa Cora Florence Wedding: The Venue
Villa Cora sits just above the Boboli Gardens, close to Piazzale Michelangelo, with views over the Florentine hills and a setting that feels simultaneously urban and completely private. The villa was built in the nineteenth century and has been restored to an exceptional standard, with interiors that combine historic grandeur with contemporary luxury.
From a photographic point of view, the interior spaces are genuinely extraordinary. The Hall of Mirrors is one of the most beautiful rooms I have photographed in Tuscany: ornate, luminous and with a quality of reflected light that produces images with real depth and atmosphere. The gardens are equally impressive, with formal Italian design and a terrace that looks out over the city.
The Ceremony at La Certosa di Firenze
One of the most distinctive elements of this particular wedding was the decision to hold the ceremony at La Certosa, the historic Carthusian monastery on the island in the Arno just outside Florence. La Certosa is one of the most atmospheric and rarely used ceremony locations in the entire Florence area, with cloisters, frescoed walls and a sense of history that is completely different from any other venue in the city.
The contrast between the monastic simplicity of La Certosa and the neoclassical grandeur of Villa Cora created a day with two completely different visual identities. The ceremony photographs have a quiet, almost contemplative quality that reflects the atmosphere of the monastery, while the reception images at Villa Cora are more opulent and celebratory.

Villa Cora Wedding Photography: The Hall of Mirrors
The Hall of Mirrors at Villa Cora deserves particular mention. The combination of gilded surfaces, mirrored walls and the natural light that filters through the tall windows creates a setting that is almost impossible to photograph badly. I used this room extensively during the getting ready and portrait phases of the day, and the images it produces have a distinctive quality that I have not found anywhere else in Florence.
For couples who choose Villa Cora, I always recommend including time in the Hall of Mirrors as part of the portrait session, regardless of the season or the time of day.

The Reception at Villa Cora
The reception at Villa Cora moved between the gardens and the interior spaces as the evening progressed. The terrace at golden hour, with the Florentine hills lit behind the villa and the city visible in the distance, produced some of the strongest images of the day. The formal garden layout, the stone balustrades and the warm light of the late afternoon created a setting that felt genuinely cinematic.
As the evening moved inside, the villa's interiors provided a completely different atmosphere: intimate, warm and deeply elegant. The combination of candlelight, historic architecture and the reflected light of the mirrored surfaces produced images that felt completely authentic to the place.

Working at Villa Cora Florence
Villa Cora rewards photographers who know it well. The light changes dramatically through the day and understanding which spaces work at which times makes a significant difference to the final result. The Hall of Mirrors works best in the morning. The garden terrace is at its most beautiful at golden hour. The interior reception spaces come alive in the evening.
I know this venue well and I approach every wedding here with a clear understanding of how to make the most of what it offers at each point in the day.
