An engagement session in Tuscany is one of the most meaningful experiences you can have before your wedding. It is not just a photoshoot. It is a quiet moment to slow down, reconnect with your partner and step into the wedding journey with calm and intention.

As a destination wedding photographer based in Tuscany with over 15 years of experience, I have photographed engagement sessions across Florence, Chianti, Val d'Orcia and the most beautiful estates in the region. In this guide I share everything you need to know to plan your engagement session in Tuscany: when to schedule it, where to do it, how long it takes and what to expect from the experience.


Why Plan an Engagement Session Before Your Wedding

An engagement session is much more than a series of photographs. It is a chance to spend time with your photographer before the wedding day, build trust and become comfortable in front of the camera. Most couples who choose an engagement session tell me afterwards that they felt significantly more relaxed during the wedding portraits as a result.

This time together also helps me understand how you move, how you interact, and what kind of atmosphere makes you feel at ease. By the time your wedding day arrives, the connection is already there. The result is a more natural, more emotional set of wedding photographs.

There is also a deeper reason. An engagement session is a moment to pause in the middle of the planning, breathe and remember why you decided to celebrate together. It becomes part of your story and a memory you will carry with you for years.

When to Plan Your Engagement Session in Tuscany

The best time to schedule an engagement session is between three and twelve months before the wedding. Three months is the minimum to have prints, albums or save the dates ready in time. Twelve months gives flexibility to choose the perfect season and location.


From a photographic perspective, every season in Tuscany offers a different atmosphere:


Spring (April to May)

Wildflowers cover the hills, the countryside turns vivid green and the light is soft and forgiving. Ideal for romantic, painterly sessions.


Summer (June to August)

Golden hours are long and skies are reliably clear. Sessions are best at sunrise or sunset to avoid the harsh midday light and the summer heat.


Autumn (September to October)

My personal favorite for engagement sessions. The vendemmia colors the vineyards in warm tones, the light becomes dramatic, and the landscape has a romantic, almost cinematic quality.


Winter (November to March)

Quieter, more intimate, with soft natural light and occasional morning mist. Perfect for couples who want something atmospheric and different from the usual.


The Best Locations for an Engagement Session in Tuscany

Tuscany offers an extraordinary variety of settings for an engagement session. The right location depends on the atmosphere you want to capture and the story you want to tell.


Florence

For couples who love history, architecture and urban elegance. Sessions in Florence often move between the Boboli Gardens, San Miniato al Monte, Ponte Vecchio and the streets of Oltrarno. Each location has its own light and personality.


Chianti

Rolling vineyards, cypress-lined roads and stone farmhouses. The Chianti landscape is the classic image of Tuscany and works beautifully for sessions at any time of year.


Val d'Orcia

The most iconic Tuscan landscape, with the rolling hills and lonely trees you see in postcards. Best for couples who want something cinematic and dramatic.


Private Estates

For couples planning a destination wedding at a specific venue, doing the engagement session at the same location creates a beautiful narrative continuity. Estates like Borgo Santo Pietro, Il Borro and Villa Cora offer extraordinary settings for engagement sessions in complete privacy.


What to Expect from an Engagement Session

A typical engagement session lasts between sixty and ninety minutes. We meet at the chosen location, take time to settle in and then move slowly through different spots, allowing the light and the surroundings to guide us.


I work in a natural, unobtrusive way. I am not looking for stiff poses or staged moments. I will give you light direction when needed, but most of the session is about you being together, walking, talking, laughing. The best photographs come from real interactions, not from performance.


If you are nervous about being photographed, that is completely normal. Most couples are. By the end of the session, almost everyone tells me they actually enjoyed it.


How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session in Tuscany

Preparation is simple but a few details make a real difference:


Wear what feels like you

Choose outfits that feel comfortable and authentic. Neutral and earthy tones tend to work beautifully with the Tuscan landscape, but the most important thing is that you feel like yourselves.


Plan around the light

Golden hour, the hour before sunset, is the most beautiful time for natural light. We will plan the session timing accordingly.


Bring something meaningful

A bottle of wine, a vintage car, a picnic blanket. Small personal elements can make the session feel more authentic and uniquely yours.


Trust the process

You do not need to know how to pose. That is my job. Your job is simply to be present together.

Engagement Session as Part of Your Destination Wedding Experience

For couples planning a destination wedding in Italy, the engagement session can be more than a photoshoot. It can become part of the wedding experience itself. A relaxed afternoon together in Tuscany, away from the logistics and the guests, where you can simply enjoy each other and the place you have chosen to celebrate.


Many of my clients combine the engagement session with their pre-wedding trip, scheduling it the day before the wedding or during a longer visit a few months in advance. It is one of the most rewarding ways to add depth and meaning to the destination wedding experience.

How long does an engagement session last?

About sixty to ninety minutes, enough time to move through different settings, let the light evolve and capture a variety of natural moments without rushing.

Typically between 50 and 80 carefully edited images, delivered in a private online gallery within two to three weeks.

Yes. The location can be a vineyard, a historic village, a private garden or a place that holds personal meaning. I am happy to recommend the best settings based on the season and the atmosphere you want to capture.

At least two to three months before the desired date, especially for peak season between April and October. For specific venues or dates, earlier is better.

Yes. While most sessions take place in Tuscany, I regularly photograph engagements across Italy, including Florence, the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como and Rome.

Tuscan weather is generally reliable, but if conditions are unfavorable we reschedule for another date. Soft overcast light can actually produce beautiful, atmospheric images.
