How to Plan a Luxury Wedding in Chianti

  • 4 min read

Chianti is one of the most requested areas in Tuscany for destination weddings, and for good reason. Rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive groves, historic villas and castles, extraordinary food and wine, and a quality of light that changes beautifully through the seasons. If you are planning a luxury wedding in Chianti, this guide covers the most important decisions you will need to make.

Why Choose Chianti for a Luxury Wedding

Chianti offers something that very few destinations in the world can match: the combination of authentic rural Tuscany with genuinely world class hospitality and venues. The estates here have been producing wine and welcoming guests for centuries, and that history is visible in every stone wall, every cypress lined avenue and every panoramic view across the valley.

For international couples looking for a destination wedding in Italy, Chianti provides a setting that feels completely immersive. You are not just visiting Tuscany, you are inside it, surrounded by the landscape, the food, the light and the atmosphere that makes this region unlike anywhere else.

The Best Venues for a Luxury Wedding in Chianti

Chianti has an extraordinary concentration of high quality wedding venues within a relatively small area. Each has its own character, its own light and its own atmosphere.

Vignamaggio is one of the most historic estates in the region, a Renaissance villa with manicured gardens, vineyards and interiors that feel genuinely timeless. The combination of architecture and landscape here is exceptional for photography.

Castello di Vicchiomaggio is one of my personal favourites in Chianti. A medieval castle with extraordinary views over the surrounding hills, it has a character and an intimacy that larger venues cannot replicate. The light here is beautiful throughout the day.

Castiglion del Bosco is a Rosewood estate near Montalcino, one of the most exclusive venues in the entire region. The level of service and the quality of the setting are genuinely exceptional, and the landscape of Val d'Orcia provides a backdrop that is unlike anything else in Tuscany.

Borgo Santo Pietro is another landmark estate in the Sienese countryside, intimate and deeply private, with gardens and natural surroundings that make it particularly well suited for smaller celebrations.

Villa Mangiacane is a historic villa near San Casciano in Val di Pesa, with panoramic views over the Florentine hills and a refined, elegant atmosphere that works beautifully for both large and intimate weddings.

Luxury Wedding in Chianti: Choosing the Right Season

Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons for a luxury wedding in Chianti, and for good reason. April through June brings wildflowers, green hills and warm light without the heat of summer. September through November offers golden foliage, harvest atmosphere and the most dramatic skies of the year.

Summer weddings in Chianti are also beautiful but require more careful planning around the heat. Early morning ceremonies and late afternoon golden hour sessions are essential in July and August to make the most of the light and keep guests comfortable.

Winter weddings are underrated. The light is soft and even, the venues are quieter and the bare vines and misty valleys create images with a completely different atmosphere.

Planning Your Wedding Photography in Chianti

The photography at a Chianti wedding benefits enormously from a photographer who knows the region and its venues well. Every estate has locations that work at specific times of day and in specific light conditions. Knowing when to be at the vineyard, when to use the interior spaces and how to build the portrait session around the golden hour makes a significant difference to the final result.

I have photographed weddings across Chianti for over 15 years, at venues including Vignamaggio, Castello di Vicchiomaggio, Castiglion del Bosco, Borgo Santo Pietro and Villa Mangiacane. You can explore more on the Tuscany wedding photographer page.

Practical Considerations for a Luxury Wedding in Chianti

Most luxury venues in Chianti require booking well in advance. The most requested dates, particularly in May, June, September and October, can fill up 18 months or more ahead. If you have a specific venue in mind, getting in touch early is essential.

Working with a local wedding planner who knows the Chianti area is strongly recommended for international couples. The logistics of a destination wedding, from legal requirements to vendor coordination, are significantly easier with someone who knows the region and speaks the language.

For photography, I recommend booking as early as the venue itself. The combination of a fixed date and a popular venue means that availability can be limited, particularly in peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should we book a venue in Chianti?

For spring and autumn dates at the most popular venues, 18 months in advance is not unusual. I recommend starting your venue search as soon as you have a general idea of the date and season you want.

Do we need a wedding planner for a Chianti wedding?

For international couples, a local planner is strongly recommended. They handle the legal requirements, coordinate with vendors and manage the logistics on the day, which makes an enormous difference to the experience.

What is the best time of year for photos at a Chianti wedding?

Spring and autumn offer the most balanced light and the most photogenic landscapes. The golden hour in October with the harvest colours is particularly extraordinary.

Can we have an elopement at a Chianti venue?

Yes. Several venues in Chianti are well suited for elopements, including Borgo Santo Pietro and Castello di Vicchiomaggio. You can find more information on the elopement photographer Tuscany page.
